Ethics & Governance

Ethics and governance are embedded in all stages of research. It ensures that research studies are designed and delivered ethically and with safety in mind. These principles ensure equality and fairness in all processes of research, from formulation of research to recruitment, delivery, analysis and dissemination.

How to complete this stage at BCHC

Good Clinical Practice (GCP) is the international ethical, scientific and practical standard to which all clinical research is conducted. The R&I team can assist you with registering for GCP training and acquiring the necessary knowledge and expertise to become research active.

All research undertaken within the NHS will need a Sponsor as defined by the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care research, and regulatory approval from the Health Research Authority (HRA). All research sponsored by and or undertaken at BCHC will also need a confirmation of Capacity and Capability notification before recruitment can start (identification of potential participants).  Research undertaken at other NHS organisations will also need a confirmation of Capacity and Capability notification from their respective R&D departments.

The BCHC R&I department can help, and advise on what standards, principles, approvals and regulations apply to your research as needed.
